Case Studies
Corus Hi-point's distinctive Kalzip Roof and Loft
By using SFS intec's revolutionary self-tapping and centring structural steel fasteners, Corus Hi-point's distinctive Kalzip roof and loft was assembled rapidly and efficiently off-site before installing it on the ecoTech modular three-storey house at the BRE Innovation Park in Watford.
"We constructed the monopitch roof assembly to the house in four units at our Telford factory," says Kevin Turton, Project Leader for Corus Hi-point. "The new SFS TDBL fastener saved us a lot of time because it enabled the structural steel to be bolted together securely in a single operation with one driver from one side; there are no nuts and the washer is integral - no fiddling or dropped components.
"All the 100 by 15 mm by 1.5 mm thick steel channel sections were pre-drilled, then the SFS TDBL was just driven in. The fastener taps the holes and is self-centring, so the alignment doesn't have to be exact, saving assembly time and the need for expert direction. The thread configuration means it tightens and holds securely without the danger of over driving. This SFS innovation has led to better and more consistent fastening performance, meeting the need to retain high quality at off-site production speeds."
The Kalzip aluminium-clad roof and sidewalls to the warm roof and loft space were designed and constructed to 0.06 W/m2K in four units, which were craned on top of the ecoTech house and fastened down in a day.
"This is probably our most thermally efficient roof design," adds Kevin Turton. "It was essential to use low-conductivity austenitic stainless steel fasteners from SFS. Their top hat to deck fasteners also secured the thermal break top hat clips for the Kalzip standing seam roof and cladding."
